I am so ready for spring and you can see that in this little card.
I used Momento Tuxedo Black ink pad, some pink card stock leftover from K making valentines and some sparkly floral card stock from the Pocket Full of Posies Stack that I got on clearance some time back. The flowers were a recent purchase from a scrapbooking store going out of business sale. A friend and I bought several bottles of flowers and then divided them up so that we had a nice selection, but not a whole lot of one color. And the bling came from an after Christmas clearance at Micheal’s. I of course colored it with my watercolor paints.
All proof that this stamping hobby can actually be very economical. Invest in a few good quality stamps and hit the sales for much of the rest. I am the queen of clearance shopping. And I confess to buying the pink and red bling and some red and white ribbon from an after Christmas clearnace for the purpose of making valentines this year. Although I think K wants me to make a coloring page again for her class. Which will be rolled up and tied with the ribbon and maybe a flower with a bit of sparkle glue to the ribbon.

I have been decorating up my envelopes and packages that I send out with my nifty stamps from QKD. Today I used my Christmas Dragon, a flower from the retro circles set and some snowflakes that are not QKD. I will say that you can tell a difference on the ink distribution between the two different brands of stamps, and I really need to get the snowflakes that QKD has. But I borrowed these snowflakes from my husband who bought them for the kids to make wrapping paper.
I used a watermarking ink pad for the dragon on the front of the envie and Momento London Fog for the snowflakes and circle. On the back I used one of those $1.99 dye based stamps from my local craft store in green. I used my copics to color in the lights and the dragon’s mane.
It was a simple and inexpensive way to dress up an envelope. The best part is when the envie arrives at it’s destination the recipient will know right away that something fun is inside. This time of year, this is a great way to dress up your Yuletide mailings of all sorts. If your cards have a bit of Christmas magic on the outside, your card will be the first one they want to open.
And the nifty colorful paper is some scraps I had from trimming up an abstract painting that was on paper. It was made from gel medium, watercolors, acrylic and inks and maybe a bit of fabric dye. I stamped the images on basic white card stock and colored them with my copic markers to match the papers then cut it out. The “to,from” came from the QKD Fancy Christmas stamp set. And the ink pad was the Momento Tuxedo Black.
I am real happy that I was able to make such unique tags with things I had around the house. And I used up some scraps too. And by using up some scraps I can claim I did a bit of decluttering too.

The fist example used my Christmas Dragon stamp and was colored with Copic markers. The papers were things I had collected for collage and I used some of my paper punches I had purchased for other projects. I used a toothbrush to splatter a bit of gold paint on the red gingham paper. Probably a bit on the large size for a Christmas tag, but then my grandfather still hands out the presents at Christmas and this is one that he won’t have a hard time finding on the gift.

The second one was stamped onto some watercolor paper and painted with my watercolor paints. I will say that I absolutely love using the paints with the stamp.

Playing with these and using supplies I already have for doing my art has me thinking about the line between craft and art. I have always maintained that drawing and painting itself was a craft even if the end result is often called art. To me it was that spark of creativity that made it art.

With these two examples I used stamps that were based on my designs. I am not sure that this stamping thing is any different from block printing. Picasso himself hired someone to make his printing plates from his designs. Picasso also was known to incorporate other people’s creations to create something new. There were his collages using wall paper and newspaper, and his sculptures that he formed around pottery made by someone else.

Since I started designing stamps for QKD I have been looking around at the things these stampers are creating. These people are creating some amazing works of art from stamps. Martha Howell first introduced me to the concept of stamps as a tool in creating art, and she does some beautiful work with them. But seeing a wider range of works that are being done just blows me away.

I think seeing what people could do with my own designs was the biggest eye opener. Several different designers took the same Thanksgiving Dragons stamp and with the different color schemes and compositions and types of settings they used each design had a completely different feel to them.

This is definitely an art form that I want to explore more of. I have said it before and I will say it again – my muse is really a magpie. And the latest shiny is stamping.

And what better example of blurring the lines than this for this week’s illustration friday theme.

I got my stamps in today and had to start playing with them. And here is my first attempt at making something with stamps that wasn’t ceramics or creating texture in an abstract painting.
The dragons are stamps that I designed for Queen Kat Designs. The text is from some other company and I am not real thrilled with the results of the text. But seeing how the ink puddled on the text and how flimsy they were, really made me appreciate the quality of my QKD stamps. I am definitely going to have to order some letter stamps from QKD.
Most of the paper, I have no clue what brand they are. I have been collecting scrapbooking papers for a few years to use in collages.
Overall I really like it. I think for a first timer, I did pretty darn good. And QKD stamps have been proven to my satisfaction to be quality products. You can see it in the crisp lines.
I want to play some more, I still have my Christmas dragon stamp to play with.

Want this card? Post in my blog or send me an email and I will put your name in the hat for a drawing.
